Awake to our impacts on the life-supporting systems of our home. Waking up to the wake of our past.
We live in interesting times, for humanity, and for life on Earth. Humanity has globalised its world, but with little regard for the value of all life and the ecosystem support networks that sustain life. We have used a very powerful but narrowly focused technology to capture and exploit what the bio-geological processes of the Earth provide.
This use has given rise to profound changes in the social relations of people, and the functioning of natural ecosystems. Because of the degree of impact, we face challenges that are critical to the well-being and health of humanity, and maybe to the survival of our species.
It is my belief, from the experiences of my life, that we are all facing a time of transformation – a disruption of the present ways of living that is forcing a fundamental reconfiguration.
Transformation processes are very different to the regular processes of a system that maintains its integrity within the dynamics of the larger system of which it is a part. They are messy and disruptive, but creative, processes when the mold is broken.
This book is a set of 26 essays (one for each letter of the alphabet) that look at such transitions from different viewpoints. They are for critical thinkers who are prepared to take actions that will remold our lives so that we can live as intimately inter-connected beings in a world of amazing diversity. To live in a way that is healthier, more productive and more resilient, within the natural dynamics and fabric of life on Earth.
